1. English Language

     There are four levels of English (Beginners, Level I, Level II and Level III) covering grammar, listening, reading comprehension and writing. All new students are required to sit for a placement test in order to determine their level.

2. Entrance Exam

Sophomore Exam (SE)
General Sciences students should take Math sc., Physics and Chemistry.
Life Science students must take Math sc. and two other science subjects depending on their choice of major.
Literature & Humanities students should take Math lit., General Sciences and Philosophy.
Sociology & Economics students must take Math lit., Sociology & Economics, and Philosophy.

3. Business Courses

     There are several Business courses offered to enhance personal development. The following courses are given on a regular basis; however, we may include tailor-made courses depending on community needs.

Human Resource Management (3 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     Practical and realistic approach to the study of human resource management with the emphasis on the interrelationship among various human resource functions.

Accounting (3 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     An introduction to the “Generally Accepted Accounting Principles”: assets, liabilities, and owner's equity; preparation of financial statements and completion of the accounting cycle.

Marketing (3 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     An Introduction to the marketing environment covering the Marketing Mix (Product, Price, Promotion & Distribution)

Consumer Behavior
     This course focuses on the understanding of various factors that influence the consumers’ buying behavior. It consists of the following four distinct portions of the consumer behavior continuum:

  1. An overview of the underpinning of current marketing thought in the field
  2. An in-depth analysis of the feelings and thoughts which motivate consumers.
  3. A focus on the buying behavior and the ways in which it influences marketing strategies.
  4. A review of the internal and external environments and the strategic initiatives that can be developed to address these issues.

Management (3 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     An understanding of the functions of business management: planning, organizing, leading, decision making and controlling.

Principles of Economics (3 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     An introduction to the principles of demand and supply, monetary and fiscal policies and national income.

Statistics for Business (3 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     An understanding of statistical data, time series, frequency distributions, probabilities, charts and surveys.

Elementary Business Principles (3 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     An introduction to the business environment (basic business functions, accounting, finance, management, marketing & economics)

Selling Techniques (3 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     This course covers the following topics:

  • What is selling.
  • General accounting principles.
  • Time management.
  • The Psychology of selling.
  • The winning edge concept.
  • Attitude versus aptitude.
  • Self-employment.
  • Systematic Desensitization.
  • McGregor Theory.
  • Categories of Customers.
  • Categories of salespersons.
  • What makes our sales volume.
  • Taking the appointment.
  • The sales process.
  • The sales presentation.
  • Presenting your proposal.
  • Follow up with after sales service.
4. Computer Usage Courses

Computer Usage Level I (3 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     Introduction to basic information system theory and practice. Use of computers “Electronic Department Processing”. Business application software: spreadsheet, word processing, power point presentations ,internet surfing and managing emails using outlook express.

Computer Usage Level II (3 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     The student should have a basic knowledge about computers. The course concentrates on system utilities, desktop publishing, spreadsheets and basic web page design using front page.

5. Computer Graphics Courses

     The following courses are tailored for those who wish to keep abreast with the new technology. Once the student completes all the 5 courses, he/she will be able to design an interactive web page using different softwares. A certificate will be issued at the completion of each course.

Web Page Design using FrontPage (4 hours/week - 5 weeks)
     This course will introduce the students to Front Page and address the basis of website creation, from URLs and hyperlinks to text formatting and image use. By the end of the course, the student will have his/her own page online for the entire world to see!

Photoshop & Illustrator (4 hours/week - 5 weeks)
     The features in Photoshop and Illustrator overlap and complement one another. This course aims to teach how to best use both softwares and achieve results. The participants will work on cartoon, company logos, photographic imaging, and colorful illustrations.

Animation using Flash (4 hours/week - 5 weeks)
     Flash incorporates three applications in one: a vector drawing program, an animation package, and a sophisticated web development tool. Using Flash to create animated sequences is one of the best ways to add interest to a Web site. The course will focus on four of the most common types of animation found on Flash based Web sites: Animated buttons, animated menus, animated text and shape effects, and animated pre-loaders.

Web Page Design using Visual InterDev (4 hours/week - 5 weeks)
     A course designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to develop interactive Web sites. The course uses a hands-on approach that enables students to acquire the ability to develop, plan and implement a Web site using Microsoft Visual InterDev.

QuarkXPress (4 hours/week - 5 weeks)
     The student will learn how to use QuarkXPress application to create many kinds of documents from single-page advertisements to multi-page brochures and magazines. In the process, students will learn techniques and shortcuts for navigating through the QuarkXPress environment, as well as using master pages and guides to design a document's layout and add page numbering.

6. Art Courses

     Art courses are usually taken for personal satisfaction. They encompass the following:

Printmaking (3 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     A printmaking course for advanced artists allowing them to explore several techniques such as:

  • Etching
  • Aquatint
  • Soft Ground
  • Transfer
  • Monotypes
  • Others

      The aim of this course is to encourage artists to develop their skills in printmaking techniques and acquire more proficiency in this form of artistic expression.

Mass Communication (3 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     This is basically a theoretical course that discusses the development and progress of mass communication media with the emphasis on the effects of the communication revolution and technological progress. The course will cover the conceptual history of print, media, television, film, advertising, public relations and the recent electronic revolution.

Pottery (4 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     An introductory course to the primary techniques of handmade pottery, its maintenance and finish.

Painting / Drawing (4 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     The objective of this course is to enhance individual awareness of the visual world and encourage personal expression.

Jewelry Craftsmanship (3 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     An introductory course for jewelry making and craftsmanship..

Home Decoration (3 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     Providing an opportunity to learn about form, space, perspective, period styles and forming ones own style.

Photography (3 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     An introduction to photographic methods (photo development, lighting etc.)

7. Language Courses

English Language (8 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     This course focuses on various English language skills. The objective is to upgrade the proficiency of participants in English within the framework of business concerns and committals. The focal point of the course is on reading business texts, learning professional grammar and writing structures for the purpose of enabling students to convey messages in the business field efficiently and effectively.

Business Correspondence (4 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     The purpose of this course is to help participants add one more skill, communications skill, to their resumes. The course focuses on examining the various categories of business correspondence, presenting an overview of the styles and formats appropriate to each. Eventually the participants will face opportunities to communicate in business with confidence. By the end of the course, participants will be able to professionally write business letters, memos and reports.

Spanish Language (3 hours/week - 12 weeks)
     This course is designed to provide the student with a basic knowledge of Spanish, both of its conversational form and of the elementary grammatical structure. By the end of the course, the students will be able to engage in simple conversation, read short articles and write letters and simple compositions.

Special Arabic
     This program is designed for non-native speakers of Arabic. it provided the student with proficiency in all four skills: speaking, reading, writing and listening. We offer different levels and options for different backgrounds. It is a very flexibile program with three options:

  1. Tutorial.
  2. Group: whereby the maximum number of students in a group of 3.
  3. Class (3 hours / week for the duration of 12 weeks): the minimum number of students is 4
8. Noncredit Courses for Suspended Students

   (each course 3 hours/week for 14 weeks)

     This program is offered to suspended LAU students who have a GPA above 1.2. Each student must complete 4 courses with a passing grade in order to join LAU's regular program in the following semester.

The courses are:

  • Logic & Methods of Reasoning
  • Stress & Time Management
  • Study Skills & English Communication
  • Accounting or Intro to Business
9. Physical Education

     LAU's indoor swimming pool answers the need of many schools where swimming is a required sport for the French Baccalaureate. Other physical education courses, such as tennis and stretching are also available.

10. Certificate Programs

     In order to be eligible for admission to the certificate programs the candidate:

  • Should have completed the Bacc I, or its equivalence.
  • Should sit for the English placement test and get a passing grade
10.1. Development of Secretarial Skills

     A one-year program (starting in the fall semester) designed to develop the office management skills for future secretaries. The program consists of the following 7 courses: English Language, Office Computer Application, Elementary Business Principles, Business Correspondence, Secretarial Computer Literacy, Behavioral Skills & Office Management, and Management of Office Finance.

Students may enroll in any of the courses without being candidates in the program.

Session I (12 Wks)

English Language (8 hours/week)

Elementary Business Principles (3 hours/week)
     An introduction to the business environment (basic business functions, accounting, finance, management, marketing & economics)

Secretarial Computer Literacy (1 hours/week) (3 hours/week)
     Developing basic touch keyboarding skills on a computer. Students will learn the alphabetical, symbol key, and ten-key pad.

Business Correspondence (4 hours/week)
     The purpose of this course is to help participants add one more skill, communications skill, to their resumes. The course focuses on examining the various categories of business correspondence, presenting an overview of the styles and formats appropriate to each. Eventually the participants will face opportunities to communicate in business with confidence. By the end of the course, participants will be able to professionally write business letters, memos and reports.

Session III (12 Wks)

Office Management & Behavioral Skills (2 hours/week)
     Introduction to the office environment: mail handling, filing system, information channeling, organization of meetings and appointments. Communication Skills (taking appointments, answering telephone calls, greeting people).

Management of Office Finance (3 hours./week)
     Handling of daily financial transactions (petty cash, receipts, orders, bills).

Office Computer Application (3 hours./week)
     Introduction to basic information system theory and practice. Use of computers Electronic Department Processing. Business application software: spreadsheet, data base management and word processing.

10.2. Preschool Training

     A teacher-training program designed to prepare students for employment and career advancement in the field of early childhood education. The aim of the program is to provide students with sufficient knowledge and practical skills to be able to plan and implement developmentally appropriate programs for children from 2 to 6 in various types of child care settings. Through this one-year / three-semester program trainees update their teaching methods and earn a certificate.

11. Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA ®) Review Course

      The Continuing Education Program (CEP) and the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) Lebanon Chapter have joined their efforts to deliver a CISA Review Course.
